Timber is a natural, environmentally friendly, sustainable and practicle flooring material. Timeless in its appeal timber floors add a feeling of space, beauty, warmth and unique character to any location, style or purpose. AST timber floors are hardwearing, easy on the feet and legs and naturally beautiful offering the innovative and creative architect and designer unlimited scope and flexibility in design options both domestically and commercially.

General design considerations

In design a few practical considerations and their effects prior to construction and installation will ensure that potential problems affecting the performance of the floor can be avoided. So the end result is a hardwood floor that looks great, performs well and is enjoyed and admired for years to come.

These include:

  • Ventilation and drainage
  • Moisture barriers for concrete slabs
  • Moisture content and integrity of substrate
  • Air conditioning and heating systems
  • Direct sunlight through large windows and skylights
  • Dry or moist prevailing winds
  • Timber species and colour
  • Timber features
  • Board laying direction
  • Methods of fixing
  • Hardness and foot traffic
  • Suitability of structural support
  • Timber finish selection
  • Every AST hardwood floor has been carefully seasoned, precision milled and quality checked prior to dispatch from the mill. Like all kiln-dried products it requires careful handling, storage and installation to ensure the best possible appearance and performance in service. Please refer to our guide ‘Before & After you choose your tongue and groove natural timber flooring” and the guide to installing timber strip flooring.

    The Solar difference

    Sourcing our timber

AST processes a variety of native Australian hardwoods sourced from both public (approx 90%) and privately owned (approx 10%) forests.

Our timber is mainly sourced from the renewable regrowth forests owned by the NSW state government and managed by Forests NSW whose native forest management is internationally recognized as being at the forefront of world’s best practice.

These forests are sensitively and sustainably managed by professional, independent government agencies for a range of values including environmental, cultural, recreational, water catchment and commercial timber production.

AST is firmly committed to the principles of sustainable forest management and the utilization of each log to its maximum value-added potential. Over 98% of our annual sawn timber production is processed through our state of the art solar kiln drying and processing plant. Here green timber is carefully seasoned, solar kiln dried and manufactured into a range of quality decorative hardwood flooring products that achieve maximum utilization of the harvested renewable resource.
